Amidst the approaches adopted by the policy makers in the current period, there has been a gradual (though relatively unstructured) engagement of the corporate sector in the livelihood domain, mainly through philanthropic work. The amendment to the Companies Act to include mandatory spending on social development in the country, combined with the emerging focus on development financing involving the corporate sector, highlights a larger role for the private sector in catalysing and realizing the objectives of social and economic transformation.

Companies spending on relief material meant for flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir, which is facing a humanitarian disaster of enormous proportions, will be allowed to count this toward their mandatory 2 per cent spending on corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives under the Companies Act, a senior government official said. Disaster relief can't otherwise be grouped under this heading.

Biodiversity champions from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Odisha are amongst the winners of the 2014 India Biodiversity Awards. The 2014 Awards ceremony was held at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day.

Announced by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the United Nations Development Programme, the India Biodiversity Awards recognize excellence in biodiversity governance across the country. The awards process was facilitated by NR Management Consultants India Pvt. Ltd.

Government of India has been promoting sanitation coverage through Total sanitation Campaign (TSC) to ensure better health and quality of life for people in rural India. To add vigour to its implementation, Government of India has launched an incentive scheme called “Nirmal Gram Puruskar” (NGP) for fully sanitised and open defecation free Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) viz Gram Panchayats (GPs), Block Panchayats (BPs), districts and states .
